The Voices of Civil Rights Bus
Tour visited 39 cities
in 22 states, beginning in Washington, D.C., on August
3. The bus traveled part of the route of the 1961 Freedom
Riders, stopping at historic sites along the way from
Virginia to as far west as California, north to Milwaukee,
and on to historic Topeka, Kansas. Nearly 200,000 people
attended Voices of Civil Rights events in their communities
and thousands shared their personal stories about the
quest for equality in America.
A team of award-winning
journalists traveled the entire route. Read their personal
reports from the road on the journal
page. Then view
photographs of the people and special commemorative events
that made up the tour, by award-winning photojournalist
Lester Sloan.
The History Channel also filmed the tour for its documentary Save
Our History: Voices of Civil Rights. View some
of the History Channel's footage on the video page.
