Miami, Florida
Nérida “Nery” Ynclán was a baby
when her parents fled their native Cuba to Miami. She grew
up to become a journalist reporting on the fight for freedom
all peoples share, the universal yearning to be heard, to
have a choice, to matter. She is now a freelance writer
and producer in South Florida. A graduate of Northwestern's
Medill School of Journalism, she began her career at
The
Miami Herald as a reporter and went on to television
as a reporter and anchor in Miami and Los Angeles. She returned
to the
Herald years later, where she served as
assistant city desk editor, deputy features editor, and
multimedia editor. During this time she also appeared daily
on television, doing segments from the paper's newsroom
for the local NBC and CBS stations. Nery was part of the
core team of editors on work that won the
Herald
two Pulitzer Prizes: one for community service following
Hurricane Andrew and one for breaking news following the
Elián González crisis.
